The first phase of the project was implemented in September 2001. According to the project the original two storey dwelling house with a basement (built in 1930ies as a plastered wooden construction building) was adapted to the needs of the International preschool. Programme of the first phase with 7 classrooms and auxiliary premises perfectly corresponded to the structure of layout of the former dwelling house. More…
During the next two years the International preschool succesfully developed and soon the premises could no longer meet the demands. The new programme anticipated to expand the age range of the pupils and to establish also a primary school with additional 6 classrooms. The programme also demanded a dining-room, a library, art, language and informatics studios and a sports hall with dressing rooms.
The total space of the old school building completely satisfies the preschool demands and the new project prescribes no changes there. The two new annexes are located within the plot behind the old building directly on the longitudinal axis. Two storey building with semi-basement containing classrooms and studios is located on the axis directly behind the old house and is followed by the third building – the sports hall. Thus the volumes of the buildings compose a calm linear silhouette. The seperate parts of the school are connected together with one storey glass corridors. The volume of the old house is equal to the volume of the sports hall and they both form the finishing ends of the composition. Within the middle of the central building there is a three storey high hall comprising stairs. Classrooms are located on both sides of the stairs with open glass walls facing the garden towards the the North and the South. The three storey atrium is lit by overhead lighting within the roof.
The new annex of the school is defined as addition of modern functional wooden architecture which nevertheless clearly respects and repeats the silhuette of the original house. The volume of the annex tries to operate with traditional materials – wood and glass – within the scope of contemporary thinking and in relation to the existing volume and situation. The volumes of the school buildings are covered with calm low-pitched roofs, arrangement of the glass planes in the facades also in a way repeats the rythm of original composition of windows and walls of the old house – a composition which was the key for the authors in search for the new volumes.
