RECONSTRUCTION OF A SUMMER HOUSE IN JURMALA

The historic wooden summer house is located on the territory of the former Bulduri Manor, which was later divided into small plots. The first owner of the building was Jānis Zemgalis, who acquired the real estate in 1924 and built a luxurious wooden summer house on it in the style of national romanticism. The architect of the building is unknown. In 1933, AS “Livonija” sold the property to M., R. and T. Tankelovičs. In 1948, the property was nationalized, and during the Soviet period it housed the boarding house “Lielupe”. In 1998, the building was granted the status of a protected monument of national importance. In 2002, the wooden summer house was rebuilt into a guest house, the project of which included the construction of a new extension on the sea side, which was not implemented. In 2015, the building was purchased by a new owner who wants to restore the building to its original function - a residential house for one family. A lightweight summer veranda with a sauna and a utility room is planned on the courtyard side of the building. The renovation project for a single-family residential house provides for returning the building to its original function. The project proposal fully respects the structure and image of the wooden architectural monument. The new layout of the house is subordinated to the structure of the wooden structures of the building. The project draft proposes to completely restore the volume of the building and two main facades, from the street and from the left side, when viewed from the street. When renovating the building, the project draft proposes to make two changes to its volume in two facades: 1) create a protrusion of the external wall of the stairwell and the main entrance node on the right side facade from the driveway, 2) build a pediment of the courtyard facade on the roof floor of the building. Both changes to the volume of the building make it symmetrical in two roof axes, and sequentially the street facade becomes symmetrical to the courtyard facade, as well as both side facades become symmetrical with the dimensions of the protrusion in the central part. These two changes stem from the functional structure of the building – it is being transformed from a summer cottage into a year-round home. The roof of the building is planned to be covered with cedar shingles.
