KALNCIEMA STREET

Proposal for the renovation of wooden buildings in the block between Melnsila and Slokas streets Architects: Zaiga Gaile, Pēteris Blūms Kalnciema street is the main traffic artery in Pārdaugava, connecting the airport "Rīga" and Jūrmala with the city center. On both sides of the section between the railway bridge and Slokas street there are rows of classicist-style wooden houses, which form a single urban and stylistically unified ensemble that has been uniquely preserved in the context of today's Europe. The project for the renovation of wooden buildings was proposed to the Riga City Council in 2002 by the non-governmental organization "Latvia Nostra". It was intended to draw the attention of the general public to the unique values of Riga's wooden architecture, the result of the reconstruction and renovation of which would be demonstrated through the example of a specific ensemble and to offer the Riga City Council to restore and renovate the wooden architectural ensemble, jointly creating a business card of Riga. Although most of the buildings, when visually assessed, looked dilapidated, the facade paint faded, peeling, when inspecting the buildings, it was found that the structures under the layers of paint are well preserved and the buildings can be successfully restored. The facades have preserved original details, such as cornices, borders, roofs, balconies, terraces, bay windows, verandas, railings, decorative frieze strips, the missing fragments of which can be reconstructed by making new ones based on the existing analogue. All buildings have preserved most of the original dormer windows, original parade double-leaf doors to the staircases from the street, in many places with original metal forgings. The implementation of the project began in 2006, when Riga was preparing for the NATO summit. A public-private partnership cooperation model was established for the implementation of the project, which was formed by the Riga City Council, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Defense, the State Inspectorate for the Protection of Cultural Monuments and the association “Latvia Nostra”. In 2006, the ensemble was granted the status of a national urban monument. A significant part of the Kalnciema Street ensemble is the commune established by the Damberg brothers with 6 renovated wooden buildings.
